End-of-Term Evaluations That Actually Get Used
Students rate courses anonymously. Results roll up by instructor, department, and term, automatically. Compare this year to last year in one click.
Build Your Evaluation FormCourse evaluations shouldn't be this painful
Every term, the same problems:
Commercial platforms charge $5-15 per student per year. That adds up fast
Results live in their own silo, disconnected from your course and faculty data
Instructors wait 4-6 weeks to see aggregated results
You can't answer 'did this instructor improve since last year?' without exporting to Excel
Lab courses get the same questions as lectures, with no customization
Comparing across departments means manual data wrangling every single term
The result: expensive systems, delayed insights, and feedback that arrives too late to act on.
Evaluations that connect to your academic data
Real-time results
Watch response rates climb during eval week. No waiting for a vendor to process data.
Linked records
Each evaluation connects to the course, instructor, and term. Rollups calculate automatically.
Anonymous
Students don't identify themselves. You see aggregated ratings by course, not individual names.
Term-over-term
Did Dr. Smith improve since last spring? Filter by term and see immediately.

Conditional Logic Examples
- Show lab-specific questions only for lab sections
- Display TA rating field only for courses with TAs
- Prompt for details when any rating is below 3
- Show online vs. in-person specific questions
Linked Record Use Cases
- Connect evaluations to Courses for aggregated course ratings
- Link to Instructors for individual performance tracking
- Reference Departments for division-level reporting
- Connect to Terms for longitudinal analysis
Automation Ideas
- Email reminder when evaluation period opens
- Track response rates by course section
- Alert chairs when response rate hits target
- Auto-generate instructor summary after deadline
Common issues and solutions
"Students evaluating wrong course"
- Use prefilled links with course already selected
- Send evaluation links from within the course LMS
- Add course code display on form for verification
"Low response rates"
- Set aside class time for completion
- Send multiple reminders as deadline approaches
- Show response rate to students (social proof)
"Instructors want to see results too early"
- Create time-based view that only shows after grades submitted
- Set up access controls in Airtable
- Use Airtable Interface with delayed visibility rules
Course evaluation FAQs
Can students evaluate anonymously?
Leave out name and email fields. Students pick their course, rate it, and submit. Instructors see 'BIO 101 averaged 4.2 stars,' not 'Sarah gave you a 3.'
How do we prevent multiple submissions?
For true anonymity, you trade off some duplicate risk. Options: require campus login to access the link, send unique one-time URLs per student, or accept minor duplication as the price of honesty.
Can instructors see their own evaluations?
Create a filtered view showing only their courses. Use Airtable automations to release access after final grades are submitted. No manual gatekeeping.
How do we compare across semesters?
Add a Term field (Fall 2024, Spring 2025). Group or filter by term in Airtable. Formula fields can calculate 'Dr. Jones improved 0.4 points since last fall.'
Can we customize questions by department?
Use conditional logic: if Course department is 'Engineering,' show lab-specific questions. Or create separate forms per department that all feed the same Airtable table.
