How do I generate PDFs from Airtable data?

Filla's Document Generator connects to your Airtable base and generates PDF documents from record data using customizable templates. To get started, create a document template in Filla's rich-text editor, insert merge fields by typing @ and selecting Airtable fields, then select the records you want to generate documents for. Filla pulls the data from each record, fills in the merge fields, and produces a PDF. You can generate one document at a time or in bulk for an entire view. Documents can also be generated automatically when a form is submitted, so the workflow is fully hands-off once configured.

Can I create document templates with merge fields from Airtable?

Yes. Filla's template editor supports merge fields for any Airtable field type. Type @ in the editor to see a list of available fields from your connected table. Select a field and it appears as a tagged element in the template. At generation time, the tag is replaced with the actual value from the record. Merge fields work with text, numbers, dates, currency, linked records, lookups, and formula results. You can also use loop blocks to repeat sections for linked records (like invoice line items) and conditional blocks to show or hide content based on field values.

Does Filla support digital signatures on generated documents?

Yes. Filla's Document Generator includes signature blocks that you add directly in the template editor. When a document is generated with a signature block, Filla sends an email to the designated signer with a secure, token-based link. The signer reviews the document and signs electronically. The signature is captured and embedded in the final PDF. For multi-party signing, Filla supports approval workflows where each signer is notified in sequence. The second signer receives the document only after the first signs. Signed documents are stored in your Airtable base as attachments.

Can I generate documents for linked records (like invoice line items)?

Yes. Filla's loop blocks let you repeat a section of the template for each record in a linked record field. For example, if your Invoices table links to a Line Items table, you can add a loop block in your invoice template that generates a row for each line item. Inside the loop, merge fields pull data from the linked records: description, quantity, unit price, total. The loop repeats once for each linked record, producing a properly formatted table of line items. This is how most Filla users generate invoices, purchase orders, and project reports with variable-length detail sections.

What output formats does Filla support for document generation?

Filla generates documents in three formats: PDF, HTML, and DOCX. PDF is the most common choice for invoices, contracts, certificates, and any document that needs to look the same everywhere. HTML output is useful for generating email bodies, web content, or embedding in other systems. DOCX output creates Microsoft Word-compatible files that recipients can edit, which is useful for drafts, proposals, and collaborative documents. All three formats use the same template. You choose the format at generation time without redesigning anything.
