What document upload does

When document upload is enabled, respondents can upload a document (such as a PDF, invoice, or application form) and Filla uses AI to extract information and populate the form fields automatically. The respondent can then review and correct the parsed values before submitting.

Setting up document upload

1

Open the Form Settings dialog

Click the gear icon in the editor toolbar.
2

Go to the Document Upload tab

Select the Document Upload tab in the dialog.
3

Enable document upload

Toggle Enable document upload to on.
4

Add AI instructions (optional)

Provide custom instructions in the AI instructions textarea to guide how the document content maps to your fields.

AI instructions

The AI instructions textarea lets you describe how the uploaded document should be parsed. For example:
  • “This is an invoice. Extract the vendor name, invoice number, date, and total amount.”
  • “Look for the applicant’s name in the header and their address in the first paragraph.”
The more specific your instructions, the more accurate the parsing.
Document upload is only available when the form’s intake method is set to Web. It does not appear in email intake mode.

How it works

  1. The respondent opens the form and uploads a document
  2. Filla sends the document to AI for parsing
  3. The AI extracts values and maps them to the form fields
  4. The respondent reviews the pre-filled values, makes corrections if needed, and submits

When to use document upload

  • Intake workflows where respondents have data in existing documents (invoices, applications, contracts)
  • Reducing manual data entry by pre-filling fields from uploaded files
  • Processing standardized forms or templates that respondents already have filled out on paper or in PDF format
